KFC comes to town in 1983

KFC came to Masterton June 28, 1983. It was the 41st outlet to open in New Zealand and the first of the American franchises for Wairarapa. A 15-piece family pack would cost $12.20 and a small chips was just 75 cents. For those who were a bit healthier you could buy corn for 80c, and for the truly hungry, a 50-piece party hamper for $47.50.

• Photograph supplied by the Wairarapa Archive. The Wairarapa Archive is situated at 79 Queen St, Masterton, and is open every weekday afternoon. The archive’s collection includes many thousands of heritage photographs. Over 15,000 are available to view on line at the Picture Wairarapa website http://bit.ly/1f9sxzl
