Tuna vessel aground at Te Awaiti

A look back through Wairarapa Shipwrecks [July 30, 2020]. The 282-ton Masa Maru 15 was a Japanese tuna fishing vessel, who, through a series of mistakes on the night of May 28, 1971, found herself grounded four kilometres from Te Awaiti Station. The bewildered crew awoke to find themselves on shore instead of safely out at sea. * Photograph supplied by the Wairarapa Archive. The Wairarapa Archive is situated at 44 Queen St, Masterton, and is open every weekday afternoon. The archive’s collection includes many thousands of heritage photographs. Over 25,000 are available to view on line at the Picture Wairarapa website http://bit.ly/1f9sxzl
