Vineyards, eateries at your door

SUE TEODORO sue.teodoro@age.co.nz

With many events on pause under level 2, there are still plenty of family-friendly activities across the region this weekend. An excellent way to support our backyard is to visit one of the many award-winning vineyards, eateries and markets right on our doorstep.

Martinborough Wineries

Martinborough is a good place to start, with more than 20 cellar doors, each with its own style. Most are within easy walking or cycling distance of the village square, making it a good choice for families and groups. Popular wineries that also offer food are

Poppies, Moy Hall, Tiwaiwaka and Ata Rangi. Tucked away on the edge of the village on Todd’s

Rd, Colombo Martinborough is many people’s first choice. With plenty of parking [for cars and bikes], excellent pizza and a rustic outdoor area set among the vines, it hums at the weekend. Colombo offers seated tasting as well as wine by the glass. Bookings are requested for six or more.

Martinborough Eateries

Apart from wineries, there’s plenty of other options in and about Martinborough Square. Subject to level 2 restrictions, most central eateries open at the weekend. Cafe Medici, In The Neighbourhood, and The Village Cafe and Bar in Kitchener St are good family-friendly options. In the evening, takeaways are available from Siam Kitchen, Little Square Pizza and Union Square at the Martinborough Hotel. Greytown’s Aroma India recently opened a store in town too.

Farmers Markets

For the second time since lockdown, farmers markets are back in Featherston and Masterton. From 8 am today in Featherston and 9 am In Masterton, a range of fresh local produce and craft will be on sale. In Masterton, the market is under the grandstand and outside among the trees. It’s an opportunity to stock up on local fruit and vegetables, bread, cheese, eggs, honey, olive oil, sausages and more. Coffee and snacks are also on sale. In Featherston, gourmet, grainfree, free-range doggy treats will be on sale. They are also made with fresh, locally sourced, human-grade ingredients and handmade in Wairarapa. Natural chews [for pooches] are also on sale.
