Wheels park design approved

A long time in the making, South Wairarapa councillors are set to approve a design for Greytown’s new wheels park for public consultation.

In its Long Term Plan [LTP] – adopted on June 30 – South Wairarapa District Council [SWDC] included the decision to develop a new play space on the corner of Pierce and Cotter Sts.

A total of $1 million had been allocated in the LTP to get the project started, with further funding needed to complete the project.

The park would have no impact on rates, with funding coming from reserve contributions paid by developers when subdividing land.

The $1m would set up the foundation of the wheels park, including the car park and toilets, skate/scooter park, a half basketball court, lighting and cameras, a pump track, children’s playground, and planting and landscaping.

The costs for ongoing maintenance had not been investigated at this stage but would need to be met by SWDC.

At Wednesday’s Assets and Services Committee meeting, councillors will be asked to approve the concept and then public consultation will begin.

A Greytown wheels park has been in the works for more than 25 years, with many different residents taking up the mantle to bring the concept to life.

In 2010, there was an attempt to develop a skate park at Soldiers Memorial Park, which failed because of community opposition to the location.

The town’s community board kept the idea top of mind and land subsequently became available on Pierce St, adjacent to the dog park.

In 2015, a steering group was set up to push forward with a skate park, but over time, funding became an issue and the project came to an end.

SWDC picked the project up again in 2020. –
